THE INTERVIEW

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF, YOUR STORY, AND HOW YOU CAME INTO THE WORLD OF ART.

I am an architect, and I have always been interested in the study of spaces, their interaction with light, colours, and various materials. In several of my projects, I incorporated landscaping, which led me to explore the natural environment and its dialogue with architectural works.

I grew up in an environment connected to art. My father, an ophthalmologist by profession, had a great talent and passion for painting. He knew a lot about classical and contemporary art, and through books and films, he introduced us to a vast spectrum of the artistic world. My mother, a landscaper, devoted time to painting religious icons, which allowed me to see her constantly studying different historical contexts, the use of colours, and artistic techniques.

At 15, I began exploring painting, which for me became a rich language of expression, allowing me to bring to life ideas and worlds that arose in my imagination.

WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO AUSTRALIA, AND HOW HAVE YOU LIVED YOUR ARTISTIC JOURNEY HERE?

I came to Australia six years ago for my wife’s studies. While working in real estate, I rented a studio at North Head National Park in Manly, where I work on my painting projects some afternoons and weekends. In 2023, I began participating in art fairs like The Other Art Fair and exhibitions in the local council.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR ARTISTIC STYLE OR APPROACH?

My style is grounded in abstraction, deeply inspired by nature and the cosmos. I mainly work with mixed techniques, combining acrylic with other mediums, and using the “dripping” technique, which adds a dynamic and fluid dimension to my compositions. I enjoy experimenting with the interaction of paint layers, creating depth and textures that invite the viewer to dive into the work.

The creation process begins with sketches where I plan the basic shapes and colours I want to explore. However, when I face the canvas, whether on the floor, the walls, or an easel, I leave significant room for spontaneity. At that moment, I allow the work to take on a life of its own, guided by intuitive gestures, often resulting in unexpected and organic shapes.

When I paint, the dimensions of time and space seem to dissolve. I focus on the movement of colour, how it flows and spills over the surface, and how each layer interacts with the previous one, creating a dialogue between the planned and the spontaneous. This approach allows me to capture the energy and rhythm of nature, the ethereal, and the cosmic through abstraction.

Cristóbal's artistic approach, based on a blend of planning and spontaneity, invites viewers to experience art in a fluid manner. This way of working reminds us that art is not just the result of a structured process but also about allowing things to flow naturally, something we can apply not only to art but to many aspects of life.

WHAT DO YOU AIM TO ACHIEVE WITH YOUR WORKS?

My works are mainly inspired by my experiences with the natural environment. My goal is to create compositions that invite the viewer to connect with the world I depict, allowing them to interpret their own vision of nature. Although my creations are often abstract and complex, I play with layers, shapes, and colours to generate a dreamlike atmosphere. I aspire for the viewer to lose themselves in them, dream, and experience new emotions.

HAVE YOU BEEN INFLUENCED BY OTHER ARTISTS OR ARTISTIC MOVEMENTS?

Absolutely, I’ve been influenced by various movements and artists. I’ve always felt a strong connection with Abstract Expressionism, drawing inspiration from Pollock, Rothko, and de Kooning. The spontaneity of technique and the playful dimension of the creative process attract me deeply, as they align with the freedom I experience when working on a new piece. I also find echoes of Surrealism, Pointillism, and Dadaism in my work. From Surrealism, I’ve drawn elements from Roberto Matta, and from Romanticism, I’ve been inspired by William Turner’s study of shadows. Recently, I’ve begun exploring Japanese aesthetics, particularly their understanding of architecture and the central role they give to natural elements such as water, stones, trees, and wood.

Cristóbal's artistic references show how art can be a rich blend of influences. No matter how abstract or personal his work may be, there are always traces of other artists who have inspired him along the way. This approach teaches us the importance of recognising the influences in our own creativity, and how those references can be starting points to create something entirely new.

IS THERE A PARTICULAR STORY BEHIND SOME OF YOUR PIECES THAT YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE?

Some of my pieces do have specific stories. Some I work on repeatedly on paper, exploring shapes before applying colour and taking them to canvas. Others emerge more intuitively: sometimes, I wake up in the middle of the night with an idea, which I sketch before painting. However, many of my works come directly from facing a blank canvas, spontaneously and freely.

Music plays a fundamental role in my creative process, particularly jazz, which is always present in my studio. Jazz, with its spontaneity and ability to embrace mistakes, influences my work. Painting for me is a constant negotiation: mixing and balancing colours until I feel the piece is complete.

It’s fascinating to see how music, particularly jazz, influences Cristóbal’s work. The improvisation inherent in jazz mirrors his artistic process, where ideas flow freely and spontaneously. This connection between music and art reminds us of the importance of opening ourselves to influences from other disciplines, which can deeply enrich our way of working.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR RECENT PROJECTS.

Recently, I participated in The Other Art Fair in Sydney, where I exhibited my works alongside 130 artists from countries such as Australia, South Korea, the UK, South Africa, New Zealand, and Hong Kong. The fair lasted four days and was a great experience, not only for sharing and learning from other international artists but also for interacting with visitors, who approached with curiosity to learn more about the works.

Another recent project was an exhibition in Times Square, New York. It was an interesting experience due to the sheer volume of people passing through that location. Currently, I am working on pieces for an Italian gallery that has invited me to participate in the Affordable Art Fair in Singapore this November.

Cristóbal has succeeded in bringing his art to international audiences, demonstrating the universal appeal of his work. From Sydney to New York, his ability to connect with the public through abstract art and his particular style resonates across cultures. This highlights that when art has an authentic essence, it can transcend borders and be appreciated in any corner of the world.

IS THERE A PIECE OF YOURS THAT HAS IMPACTED YOU MORE THAN OTHERS, AND WHY?

New York, 2011

There are always certain works that mark you more, whether because they represent a milestone in your career or because they are linked to life experiences that left a special impression. One of the first pieces that particularly impacted me is called New York, and as the name suggests, it hangs in a residence in that city. I made it almost 20 years ago. This piece resulted from my exploration with the dripping technique and the bold use of strong colours, such as yellow and red. The work captures the noise, chaos, and movement of the city, reflected in different planes: the subway and the towering skyscrapers of Manhattan. For me, this work was a milestone, as it was one of my first commissions, and I thoroughly enjoyed the entire creation process.

WHAT WILL YOU BE PRESENTING AT CHILE SENTIDO AND WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE IT?

I’ll be presenting a work that depicts an interpretation of Chilean geography. I’d prefer to keep a little mystery and let the public discover the final result on their own. Part of my inspiration comes from the distance from Chile. Over time, I’ve noticed that certain unique features of the Chilean landscape and culture stand out more prominently. Nostalgia has also been a great source of inspiration.

WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS FOR THIS EXHIBITION?

I have quite high expectations. The team organising this art event is excellent, and they’ve done a very professional job. I feel fortunate to have been invited by the Chilean Australian Association (CASA) to participate in the first edition of this cultural event, sponsored by the Chilean Embassy. I’m excited to work with and learn from fellow Chilean artists who present varied styles and have distinguished careers.

LOOKING BACK, WHAT HAS BEEN ONE OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT MOMENTS IN YOUR ARTISTIC CAREER?

My journey in Australia, and particularly participating in two seasons of The Other Art Fair, has undoubtedly been one of the most significant milestones in my career. It has not only opened doors to high-level galleries and exhibitions but has also allowed me to understand the complexities of the art world, its challenges, managing expectations, and the various avenues I want to explore as I continue to take the next steps.

HAVE YOU NOTICED ANY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE ART SCENE HERE COMPARED TO YOUR COUNTRY OF ORIGIN?

Chile boasts great artists and galleries, and I would love to work with them in the future. In Australia, I have found a significant openness towards foreign artists, providing greater space for artistic creation. In my experience, I have encountered good opportunities to exhibit and promote my work here. Additionally, Australia, being a cosmopolitan country with a strong connection to Asia, offers me a unique platform to expand into other markets.

WHAT ARE YOUR UPCOMING PROJECTS OR GOALS IN YOUR ARTISTIC CAREER?

Currently, I am focused on my upcoming exhibition in Singapore, which will take place in November this year, and I am working on a series of works that I will send to Chile. Among my goals is to establish contact with galleries in Europe and North America to expand my presence in new markets.

WHAT DOES PARTICIPATING IN THIS EXHIBITION MEAN TO YOU?

For me, participating in this exhibition is a very special opportunity, not only to share my vision of Chile but also to learn how other artists interpret the various traits and characteristics of our country through their senses. I am excited to tell the story of Chile from my own artistic perspective while discovering how others express that essence. Contributing to bringing the riches of Chile to Australia through art fills me with enthusiasm. Moreover, I am deeply interested in connecting with other artists from the Chilean community, learning from their experiences, and exploring the possibility of collaborating in future exhibitions.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO CONTINUE BEING PART OF THESE GATHERINGS? DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEAS ON HOW TO FURTHER STRENGTHEN THIS CHILEAN-AUSTRALIAN COMMUNITY?

Absolutely.

I believe it would be very beneficial to continue hosting this event annually and seek ways to attract more Australians to discover Chile through art. It would also be positive to establish partnerships with various councils to include Chilean artists in their exhibition programmes. Additionally, it would be a great support for artists to continue receiving backing from CASA when applying for art awards or establishing links with Australian galleries.

WHAT MESSAGE WOULD YOU LIKE TO LEAVE FOR THOSE VISITING THE GALLERY?

I hope that people can enjoy the event, and that those who visit the gallery can take a piece of our beloved Chile home with them.

HOW CAN INTERESTED INDIVIDUALS FOLLOW YOUR WORK OR GET IN TOUCH WITH YOU?
