Sydney Film Festival 2017

We are delighted to have the documentary "THE GROWN-UPS" and the film "A FANTASTIC WOMAN" from CHILE playing at the Sydney Film Festival, which is from June 7th to 18th.

THE GROWN-UPS

Winner of Zeno Mountain Award in Miami, Best female director at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam, Audience Award at the Femmes de Créteil Films Festival, France.

Adults, but seldom treated as such: that's the dilemma facing this group of friends with Down syndrome, in this warm and compassionate documentary.

When we first meet Anita, she's justifiably frustrated with her boring kitchen job and overprotective parents – she's been attending the same school for 40 years. Things start to look up when she begins a romance with the courteous Andrés and the loving duo dream of doing what everyone else does, including marriage and having a family. Their friend Ricardo works part-time and also has plans for the future. The school encourages its mature students to be responsible adults, but do they really have any say in their future? This is not a sombre film – it's full of joy and intimacy, a recurring quality in the work of talented Chilean director Maite Alberdi (Tea Time, SFF 2015).

A FANTASTIC WOMEN

Winner of Teddy Award in Berlin (Best film and best screenplay).

The exquisite tale of a transgender woman mourning her lost lover from red-hot Chilean filmmaker Sebastián Lelio (Gloria, SFF 2013). Winner of the Screenwriting Award at Berlin.

A Fantastic Woman is, to put it simply, a fantastic film. It is compassionate portrait of the day-to-day challenges of transgender life, but cast aside any expectations of a tragic outsider wallowing in victimhood. Santiago bar singer Marina Vidal, played by sensational trans actress Daniela Vega in her screen debut, is headstrong, vivacious, confident and beautiful. After her much older lover, Orlando (Francisco Reyes), dies suddenly, Marina wants to grieve just as anyone would. When met with suspicion and prejudice by authorities and Orlando's family, Marina boldly steps forward to expose the banality of intolerance and prove that she is, indeed, a fantastic woman.
